How to import gold from Africa — legally
A clear, honest overview of the lawful route to import gold and diamonds from Cameroon: declared export at origin, customs and duties, the Kimberley Process, KYC and how payment protects both sides.
1. Declared export at origin
Legitimate gold leaves Cameroon through the official channels — a MINMIDT-authorised export office, declared production, SONAMINES oversight, and a certificate of origin plus an assay certificate for every lot. Rough and cut diamonds move under the Kimberley Process certification scheme. If a seller can't produce this paperwork, the goods cannot be lawfully exported — and you cannot lawfully import them.
2. Customs, duties and Incoterms
At origin, the lawful export duty is paid and the shipment is declared. Goods typically move FOB Douala or CIF to your destination, insured throughout. On arrival, you (or your broker) clear the gold through your own customs and pay any import VAT or duty due in your country. Precious-metal imports are regulated — work with a licensed customs broker.
3. Compliance & due diligence (KYC)
Responsible trade follows OECD due-diligence principles: two-way KYC (we verify you; you verify us), source-of-goods and source-of-funds checks on significant orders, and a documented chain of custody from pit to dispatch. This protects you legally and commercially.
4. Payment that protects both sides
Pay by bank wire or staged escrow — a deposit and balance set in a signed contract, released against documents and verification. Never pay advance “fees”, “taxes”, “clearance” or “unlocking” charges: those are the signature of advance-fee fraud, not real import costs.
